_ A to Z actually began at C, went back to A, then B and D then onwards alphabetically until I finally completed Z about a year ago; by then 26 years had miraculously passed.

The overwhelming presence of a blank canvas mesmerized me so to get started I drew the random objects lying around my room. Inspired a little and paying homage to the marvelous covers of FINDING OUT magazine I distracted myself with the composition and the satisfying puzzle of fitting certain dispirit elements together in one frame. At some point I realised that everything in there began with or at least alluded to the letter C and a new part of the game began - to make an alliterative title to tell the picture’s tale, Cacophonous Composition.

Over the years the emphasis changed about. Sometimes the words seemed to take over and then at other times recede to a minimum but the format, the restrictions, always remained the same. Sometimes I designed the whole print first and then printed. Other times I started with a background (like Iris the rainbow as in I) or just a particular colour (Ochre as in O), building up the image layer by layer. The naming of all elements in the titles was not deemed a necessity. Thus the palms and parisienne plumbing in P go unmentioned though they undoubtedly portrayed their own Physical Presence…..
