                                          Eglantyne Jebb: Saving The Children
                                          Clare Mulley
                                          Nov 18, 2010. 7.00pm

Talk by Clare Mulley, author of The Woman Who Saved the Children: A Biography of Eglantyne Jebb, Founder of Save the Children, which won the Daily Mail Biographers' Club prize in 2007 and has been released on paperback in 2010. Clare is a Campaigns Ambassador for Save the Children, and all royalties from the book go to the charity. The talk will be followed by a Q&A with the author and a book-signing session.

About The Woman Who Saved the Children
In 1919 it was hugely courageous to launch a fund to help the starving children of Austria and Germany, and Eglantyne Jebb was arrested in Traflagar Square for daring to suggest such a thing. Eglantyne founded Save the Children later that year; the first donation coming from the public prosecutor at her court case. Five years on she wrote the pioneering statement of children's human rights that has since evolved into the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the most universally accepted human rights instrument in history. And yet Eglantyne was never fond of individual children, 'the little wretches' as she once called them. In this talk, to mark the paperback publication of her award-winning biography of Eglantyne, Clare provides an insight into the enigmatic Eglantyne Jebb's motivations.

                                          About Clare Mulley

                                          Picture
Clare Mulley first came across Eglantyne when working as a fundraiser at Save the Children in the 1990s and started her biography when she went on maternity leave, thereby showing far less commitment to the cause than Eglantyne who, not liking to get too close to children, never became a mother herself.

In 2006 Clare gained a distinction for her masters in Social and Cultural History at the University of London. Clare has also worked for Sight Savers International and The World Development Movement, and is a Friend of the national charity Standing Together Against Domestic Violence. An enthusiastic clubber, she is also a member of The Social History Society, The Voluntary Action History Society, The Women’s History Network, The Royal Society of Literature, The Biographer’s Club, The Society of Authors, The London Women Writers Salon, English PEN, The Fawcett Society and The National Secular Society. She has has also contributed to The Arvon Book of Life Writing (Menthuen, 2010), and is a seasoned speaker at international literary festivals and academic conferences.

Having had three very lively daughters, Clare is now working (when she gets the chance) on a group biography of three scandalous and courageous dissident Victorian sisters. She has also contributed to The Arvon Book of Life Writing (Methuen, 2010), is a seasoned public speaker and occasionally writes and blogs for various websites, and papers including The Express and The Church Times, perfect titles for a left-wing atheist.

For more information on Clare, visit her website.
