Jill McGivering
An Evening With Rosie Furber and Jill McGivering
The Last Kestrel
Oct 26, 2010. 7pm

Picture

In conversation with writer Rosemary Furber, Jill will be talking about her first novel The Last Kestrel, set in Southern Afghanistan. It’s a fast-paced and deeply moving book about British and Afghan lives caught up in the horrors of war. It was inspired by Jill’s experiences with British troops in Afghanistan where she met some remarkable Afghan women.  This will be followed by a Q&A and book signing session.

About Jill McGivering

Picture
Jill McGivering is a writer and BBC journalist. Based in London since 2005, she travels extensively across the Asian region (including Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and China), covering major news stories and carrying out in-depth investigations (including India's Naxalites, sex trafficking and counterfeit drugs in South-East Asia).

From 2004-2005, Jill was the BBC's State Department correspondent, based in Washington. She travelled widely with the then US Secretary of State, Colin Powell. The posting followed three years based in Delhi as the BBC's South Asia correspondent. She covered stories including the US-led campaign in Afghanistan, the Indo-Pakistan military crisis, sectarian riots in Gujarat, Kashmir and the Indian earthquake.

From 1997 - 2000, Jill was based in Hong Kong as the BBC correspondent for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. She reported on Asia's economic downturn, Hong Kong's first post-colonial years and landmark elections in Taiwan. Jill has also covered East Timor's violent transition to independence. During this time she won the Hong Kong Human Rights Press Award.
