Mugabe's Victims: Zimbabwe Today
Prisoners of Conscience Appeal Fund
Mar 22 - Apr 3, 2011
Free entry

Picture

London based human rights charity, The Prisoners of Conscience Appeal Fund, is hosting a compelling new photography exhibition focusing on the victims of political violence in Zimbabwe.  The images were taken by an award-winning Getty Images photographer, who travelled anonymously and at great personal risk to Zimbabwe in the summer of 2009.  He also photographed the plight of Zimbabwean exiles who had fled to neighbouring South Africa.  Each image tells the story of the courageous men and women who continue to suffer so terribly due to their brave stance against the Mugabe regime.  At a time when the UK government is considering the enforced repatriation of Zimbabwean asylum-seekers this exhibition illustrates how precarious the situation still is for so many opposition party supporters.

The photographer has allowed Prisoners of Conscience Appeal Fund to use his images without charge.  We are enormously grateful; his work illustrates clearly the violent extremes of the Mugabe regime and those who suffer under it.  We would also like to pay tribute to those individuals who courageously agreed to be photographed and allowed us to share their stories.

About Prisoners of Conscience

Picture
Originally established in 1962 as the relief arm of Amnesty International, Prisoners of Conscience  Appeal Fund is a separate charity and the only organisation in the UK offering grants specifically to prisoners of conscience;  individuals who have been persecuted for their conscientiously-held beliefs, provided they have not used or advocated violence.  Our aim is to raise and distribute money to help prisoners of conscience and their families rehabilitate themselves during and after their ordeal.  Relief grants are awarded for a variety of purposes including general hardship relief, medical costs, family reunion, travel and resettlement costs and education and training costs.  Bursary grants are available to help eligible individuals with larger educational grants specifically for post-graduate and professional conversion courses in the UK.  In addition to helping people living in the UK who have fled persecution in their home countries we also provide assistance to prisoners of conscience in  countries such as Burma, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Cuba, Tibet and Iran.  Our relief grants are modest, up to £350 for an individual and £500 for a family, but they can provide a lifeline in a time of crisis.
