                                          Writing From Your Life
                                          Maggie Smith
                                          Wednesdays, Mar 9, 16, 23, 30, Apr 6, 13, 4pm - 6pm

Our lives are the 'living history' of the 20th Century and our memories provide a record of the rapidly changing times through which we have lived. This 6-week course invites mature participants, aged 50 and above, to draw on their real life experiences to develop a body of creative work.

Using old photographs, letters, family mementos and heirlooms, participants will be guided to embedded memories - treasured toys, food; 'firsts' - job, romance, important decisions - and shown how to harness the skills with which express them in writing. These expressions may take various forms; poetry, prose, fiction or performance writing. Facilitation methods will include the use of prompts, triggers, individual and group writing exercises, constructive feedback and sharing of work.

These workshops are suitable for all, from experienced writers to complete newcomers.
Spaces are limited to a maximum of 12 participants.

                                          About Maggie Smith

                                          Picture
Formerly a life-planning consultant and counsellor, Maggie is fascinated by the often unexplored possibilities of people's lives. The author of three books on mid-life career change and multiple prize winner at writing competitions, she now concentrates on writing stories rooted in real lives, whether fictional or real, and tutors writers groups, study days and summer schools.

Maggie finds working with more mature age groups, both beginners and the more experienced, very rewarding. She is the National Coordinator for Creative Writing for the University of the Third Age, for whom she has written a Creative Writing Handbook.

Maggie brought up her family in Greenwich, lived for 20 years in Yorkshire but returned with delight to Southeast London four years ago. She misses living near the magnificient countryside, but the Thames and being involved in the life of a grand-daughter more than make up for it.
